‘A Proper Cornish Wedding Fair’
The Island Chapel is the setting for a unique Celtic wedding ceremony re-enactment at 4pm on Sunday 7th June – as part of the grand finale of the day’s events at the Guildhall’s ‘A Proper Cornish Wedding Fair’, which will run from 10.30am until 4pm in the Concert Hall. A Bridal procession, led by the ‘Cornish Highland Piper’, will leave the Guildhall at 3.30pm and will head through town up to St Nicholas Chapel, where former Grand Bard of the Gorsedd, Mick Paynter, will deliver the ceremony bilingually in Cornish and English. The ceremony was sensitively and skilfully adapted by Mick, from that used by the Bards of Brittany. It also features an adaptation of 14th century marriage poem with a meaning that still has relevance even in the modern era.
The celtic ceremony re-enactment is open for all to observe and a toast and light refreshments will be available afterwards . The re-enactment should give those contemplating a blessing at the Chapel, an ideal opportunity to view the sacred venue and to witness the beauty, rhythm and resonance of the Cornish language in action. The ceremony will begin at 4pm and Tir Ha Tavas will be entertaining the wedding party afterwards. The Chapel, however, will be open from 12 noon.
Doors will open at the Guildhall at 10.30am as the Town Mayor greets the exhibitors and members of the public. We have a diverse range of talents performing for us in the concert hall at this year’s Wedding Fair, including Kaj Music (popular singer songwriter with a broad repertoire of original songs and lively covers), Dee and Dave Brotherton aka Tir Ha Tavas will be performing cornish inspired music for us throughout the day and at the Island Chapel at 4pm and finally Cornish pipers will also feature as part of the Cornish themed day. At its centre, the aim of the wedding fair is to be informative, fun and interactive for all attending as well as being a great networking and promotional opportunity for local businesses. There are a vast range of exhibitors promoting their services and products – from a ‘pop up vintage tea party’ – which will be providing tasty refreshments, to florists, decor and event specialists, a party balloon specialist, bridal house, wedding jewellery, make- up artists, hair, nail & beauty specialists, photographers, vintage candy carts, bouncy castles, a mobile bar, bunting, caterers, white dove release specialists, cake specialists, the list is incredibly varied.
Interactive workshops will be taking place throughout the day too. Jo McIntosh, local Textile Artist, will be running 20 minute workshops to give a taste of the crafty hen parties she can offer brides to be who are looking for something a bit different for their hen party. Stedman Fielder will also be running workshops – offering couples a chance to make their own silver wedding rings and Annette Cox of ‘Colour Confidence and Wellbeing’ will be delivering colour analysis sessions with the aim of creating the perfect shades for the bridal party – making wedding dreams become a reality through colour.
Each exhibitor will be on hand to offer advice to couples and most businesses have great offers exclusive to customers visiting the fair. At 3pm a grand raffle will be drawn with many great prizes.
