In the afternoon that day from 1.45 pm to 3.45 pm, the newly elected Town Mayor will continue the custom of

“Drinking from the Loving Cup”

and distribute saffron buns to the children of the Town.

The Loving Cup

The Loving Cup was presented to the town in 1640 by Sir Francis Bassett of Tehidy.  The inscription on the base reads: “iff any discord twist my friends arise within the burrough of beloved st Ives itt is desired that this my cupp of loue to eurie one a peace maker may proue then am i blessed to have giuen a legacie si loke my hart unto posteritie”.

The Hext Sermon

The traditional Hext Church Service is held at the Parish Church immediately following the Mayor Choosing Ceremony.  Richard Hext was the first Mayor of St Ives in 1639.
